Novice Guide to Search Engine Optimization

When it comes to search engine optimization, there are so many things to consider that keeping up with everything can be tedious. In fact, going about SEO the wrong way could actually result in your website being penalized rather than moving up in the search engine rankings. Even if you’re a novice at SEO, you can still use these tried-and-true techniques to help increase the number of visitors to your site without a great deal of difficulty.

1.  Make Proper Use of Keywords

Search engine spiders “crawl” the web in order to analyze individual pages and index them according to relativity. As such, you should use keywords that are relative to your content in precisely the right areas. Think about the terms you would use if you were searching for certain information, and then try to incorporate related terms.  Doing a search for these keywords in some of the major search engines can also let you know whether they would be relevant.

2.  Create Great Content

Even with the right keywords, search engines are likely to rank your page lower than others if it does not contain good content. Your page should be free from grammar, spelling or punctuation errors in addition to flowing well and being easy to read. If you’re not an expert writer, consider hiring someone else to create this content for you.

3.  Update your Page Regularly

Even if you have great content, your page is likely to lose ranking over time if fresh material is not posted on a regular basis. That’s because search engine spiders are more likely to pick up new content as it is posted and consider it timelier than older material. Even if you only make minor changes from time to time, this can still go a long way toward improving SEO ranking.

4.  Develop Links to your Site

Generally speaking, the more links there are pointing to your site, the better your page rank will be. Even so, you must be careful to create authentic links, as your page rank could actually decrease if it appears you are spamming. One way to do this is through a link exchange whereby owners of other sites would reciprocate linking to your page in exchange for you doing the same for them. You could also share links via social media in order to increase organic traffic.

5.  Increase Social Signals

Google keeps track of what are known as “social signals”-data from social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Google +. Something as simple as a “like” on Facebook or a retweet can improve your search engine rankings, because Google notices others recognizing you as an expert. In order to make the most of your social media accounts, you’ll need to develop a relationship with your followers, as this will make them more likely to share information with others than if you continuously post spam.

You’re likely to find that some of these techniques work better for you than others do. Part of continuing to obtain good rankings involves staying on top of results so that you can refine your SEO efforts on an ongoing basis.
